Purchased in 2022 as an established short-stay accommodation business, The Roost Johanna represents another important element of The Johanna Project. The property comprises two coastal cottages constructed approximately 25 years ago, providing an opportunity to demonstrate how existing buildings can be progressively improved rather than replaced.
The Roost Johanna focuses on retrofitting these cottages with more sustainable building systems, materials and technologies to improve their energy efficiency, environmental performance and long-term resilience.
The objective is to reduce operational energy requirements, conserve resources and minimise the overall environmental footprint of the buildings. Proposed improvements include solar energy systems, water-saving technologies, improved insulation and other measures designed to enhance thermal comfort while reducing energy consumption.
By retaining and upgrading the existing structures, the project also recognises the environmental value of extending the useful life of buildings and avoiding unnecessary demolition and reconstruction.
The Roost Johanna aims to demonstrate how established accommodation can evolve through thoughtful design, responsible resource management and practical improvements to existing infrastructure.
Importantly, The Roost remains an operating accommodation business throughout this process, allowing guests to experience the property, the surrounding landscape and the broader Johanna Project as it develops.
